What comes to mind when you see this word? An ancient disease? Separation and scorn for those with this sickness? With all the marvelous advances in medicine, it couldn’t possibly be affecting people today, could it?
Friends, the answer is yes. Leprosy currently affects approximately a quarter of a million people throughout the world, with the majority of these cases reported from India. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities leads the efforts against this plight and currently runs one of the largest leprosy eradication programs in the world.
This plight is at the heart of Harvest India’s Mercy Ministry initiatives. Today, more than 250 adults and 40 children who have contracted Leprosy reside in a community in rural Guntur Province, about two hours east of Harvest India’s main campus. This compound is home to many of the most precious, Jesus-loving people I have ever met. Harvest India is there every day, providing meals, supplies, homes, and free medical care that is unavailable anywhere else in the region.
We are so thankful for your continued support! Recently, Canopy Church of Southern California blessed the Colony by sponsoring a new community center! It has become a central place on campus for our friends to meet together. We are so grateful for this gift!
We are endlessly grateful for all of you, too. As we enter our summer months, would you please consider supporting our friends at the Colony? Visit our Leprosy Outreach page to donate. A gift of any amount will help Harvest India support these special members of our family.
